Title: Deputy Director, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Experience

Pay Grade: SM2

Starting Pay: $100,168.38 Maximum: $148,064.47: Compensation commensurate with experience.

Departmental Mission Statement:

We work with court departments to build capacity around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, diversify the court workforce, provide training to court employees, establish inclusive policies and practices, and improve the court user experience.

Position Summary: Working in the Executive Office of the Trial Court, the Deputy Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is responsible for supporting a variety of projects and initiatives for the Executive Office of the Trial Court. The Deputy Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion monitors and supports fidelity to a variety of Trial Court Strategic Plan tactics, including tracking projects from initiation to completion and ensuring projects are proceeding as designed and on schedule. This position will particularly focus on identifying and implementing best practices in matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This role will also advance workplace engagement between employees, supports activities tied to access to justice, and the advancement of cultural awareness in the Trial Court between all court staff and the public. Other responsibilities include the collection of data and information on the progress of various Trial Court projects, working with the Chief Experience and Diversity Officer and other Diversity Office staff to build and increase capacity to advance the facilitated workshops for race and bias work. The Deputy Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion works in collaboration with other leaders of the Trial Court, may undertake related efforts that foster communication, cooperation, and continuous improvement among Trial Court staff.   

Supervision Received: Receives direction and supervision from the Chief Experience and Diversity Officer of the Trial Court.

Duties: This position is responsible for leading Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEl) initiatives and driving cultural change regarding DEl within the Trial Court;  

  • Identifies systems, programs, and processes that contribute to achieving the Trial Court's overall vision of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including developing both quantitative and qualitative success metrics and measures for each key initiative;  
  • Leads the development and implementation of DEl strategy in collaboration with the Chief Experience and Diversity Officer that builds a culture based on mutual respect, inclusion and mutual accountability for results;  
  • Manages and prioritizes multiple concurrent projects independently, completing work under timelines to meet established deadlines;  Collaborates with other staff of the Trial Court Diversity Office, working jointly to advance cultural competency and related initiatives in the Trial Court;  
  • Travels throughout the Commonwealth on as needed, advancing strategic goals and best practices;  
  • Identifies and Implements best practices in matters of customer service, workplace engagement between employees, and the advancement of cultural awareness in the Trial Court between all court staff and the public;  
  • Effectively conducts small-to-medium cross-functional meetings;  
  • Collaborates and builds consensus with others of different skill sets, backgrounds, and levels, including managers and staff;  
  • Monitors, evaluates, and reports on the progress of projects and/or work product; Develops content and analyses for project deliverables and meetings;
  • Prepares presentations for leadership meetings as needed;
  • Exercises good judgment in decision-making and completing job responsibilities;
  • Reviews project deliverables for completeness, quality, and compliance with established standards;  
  • Identifies and coordinates with strategic planning contacts across the organization to develop and execute a holistic strategic planning process and to advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion tactics of the Strategic Plan;
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with supported groups and project teams;
  • Escalates issues that require a resolution of conflicts on priorities, goals, strategies, resources, and key initiatives;  
  • Builds and enhances collaboration between the Judicial branch and Executive agencies whose collaboration supports the delivery of justice to those involved with the Trial Court;  
  • Organizes consultations and conferences among representatives of these organizations;  
  • Represents the Chief Experience and Diversity Officer internally and externally as needed, and acts as the Chief Experience and Diversity Officer in his/her absence;  
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Collaboration Demonstrates an outstanding ability to facilitate issue resolution and to create an environment that fosters a shared commitment to advance the strategic plans of the Trial Court.

Minimum Requirements: These are the minimum requirements necessary to apply for the position of Deputy Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:  

  • Bachelor's Degree; A graduate degree is preferred; 
  • Ten (10) years of experience advancing some combination of strategic plans, customer service, workplace engagement, process improvement, and cultural competency for a large organization; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;   Demonstrated project management and organizational skills with the ability to execute multiple concurrent projects to completion in a deadline-driven environment;  
  • Direct relevant work experience in a large, complex organization;
  • Recognized credibility and ability to influence across complex organizations;
  • Demonstrated business and organizational acumen;
  • Skillful and experienced with interventions regarding matters relating to Diversity;  
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage changing priorities;  
  • Superior communication and customer service skills, able to work effectively with all levels of the organization;  
  • Effective leadership and management skills;  
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a situation and make appropriate decisions;   Exceptional attention to detail to ensure high-quality deliverables;  
  • Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively with cross-departmental teams;  
  • Knowledge of methods used and ability to communicate and present data and research findings such as graphs, tables, and briefs, to senior policy and decision-makers including the Executive Office, Trial Court officials, and to the general public;  
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and determine the applicability of information and data to draw conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations;
  • Ability to draft reports and correspondence concisely, clearly, and logically;
  • Ability to travel within the Commonwealth;  
  • Ability to communicate professionally in both oral and written form; including the ability to perform effective public speaking;  
  • Ability to maintain highly productive working relationships with all Trial Court officials, including judges;
