Title: Summer Internship - MPS Massachusetts Probation Training Academy

Pay Grade: Summer Intern

Starting Pay: $20/ hour (Undergraduate student); $24/ hour (Graduate student)

Departmental Mission Statement: The Massachusetts Probation Service’s mission is to increase community safety, reduce recidivism, contribute to the fair and equitable administration of justice, support victims and survivors, and assist individuals and families in achieving long-term positive change.

Position Summary: Under the supervision and guidance of the Office of the Commissioner of Probation, the intern MTOC position will be assigned to the Training Division and work on various assignments that will involve the administration and development of the Massachusetts Probation Services. Training Division is responsible for maintaining the accuracy of criminal records, as well as managing the sealing and expungement processes across the state of Massachusetts. The intern should be able to provide a broad range of skilled administrative and technical support. Intern’s daily duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work collaboratively with the Training Division to deliver education and training programs.
  • Support workforce development of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to fulfill the MPS mission.

The 10-week schedule will allow the intern to participate in site visits across MPS. Site visits could include the following:

Field Services: There are 105 local-level probation offices within five of the seven court departments.  You can find probation offices in the Boston Municipal Courts, District Courts, Juvenile Courts, Probate and Family Courts, and Superior Courts. Probation officers are responsible for the daily supervision of approximately 64,000 probationers across the commonwealth.

Victim Services Unit: Serving nearly 4,000 victims and families over the past year, the VSU is essential to achieving our mission and vision. The VSU is partially funded through VOCA (Victims of Crime Act) funding.

Minimum Requirements:

• Working towards a bachelor’s degree (or graduate degree, etc.) from an accredited college or university, concentration in Criminal Justice (preferred)
• Knowledge of computer software and case management systems.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work professionally with persons at all levels, including judges and other officials, and to maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written forms, including the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to travel across the Commonwealth.
