Official Title: Legal Assistant - Office Of Jury Commissioner

Pay Grade: Grade 13S

Salary Range: 13S Entry Level Pay $59,948.20 to Pay Range Maximum $88,354.76

Starting Pay: $59,948.20 

Salary Notes: This position is designated as a Union position. All new hires must start at the entry level rate for this role per the collective bargaining agreement/MOA with OPEIU, Local 6. Pay may advance within the salary band according to the CBA/MOU.

Departmental Mission Statement: 

The core mission of the Office of Jury Commissioner (OJC) is to provide randomly-selected pools of eligible jurors, representative of the community from which they are drawn, to each of the jury courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in accordance with the needs of those courts and the direction of the Trial Court. The OJC is committed to educating the public on the value and responsibility of serving as a juror, and to providing courteous, professional service to the public and the courts.

Position Summary: Responds to telephone and written inquiries regarding juror delinquency and compensation matters with the Office of Jury Commissioner (OJC). Works with juror activity records in connection with the prosecution of delinquency matters. Compiles legal documents and materials in support of the Legal Counsel. Provides other specialized administrative support as necessary.

Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Legal Counsel.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Responds to telephone and written inquiries regarding juror delinquency and compensation matters.
• Works with juror activity records in connection with the prosecution of delinquency matters.
• Provides specialized administrative support to the Legal Counsel, Assistant Legal Counsel, and the Delinquent Juror Prosecution Program Administrator.
• Provides customer service to jurors, court personnel, attorneys, and employers.
• Processes and reviews all mail and faxes regarding delinquent jurors.
• Prepares for hearings, including reviewing documentation and cross referencing.
• Prepares legal documentation and ensures the court receives court forms.
• Assists both jurors and employers with juror compensation.
• Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements: Education and Experience:
• Associates Degree
• Two (2) years of related work experience
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for meeting minimum qualifications.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position does not require supervision of others.

Working Conditions: Work is frequently performed in office or similar indoor environments.

Physical Demands: This position requires sedentary work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
